Kathy Kater, LICSW
Kathy Kater is an internationally known psychotherapist, author and consultant who has specialized in treatment and prevention of body image, eating, fitness and weight-related concerns for 35 years. Frustrated that progress in understanding these problems had not been matched by effective prevention, Kathy developed the Healthy Bodies: Teaching Kids What They Need to Know curriculum to address the root causes of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating in today’s challenging environment. Published in association with the National Eating Disorders Association in 1998, fully updated editions were released in 2005 and 2012 to reflect new research supporting the critical need for weight stigma reduction and for promoting health instead of size in children. This comprehensive, evidence-based lesson plan was among the first of its kind to demonstrate significant measurable improvement in weight-related attitudes and reduced risk factors for disordered eating in pubescent children. Kathy’s work aims to inspire kids and adults to want to care for, connect with and take care of their diverse-sized bodies from the inside out.
