It's Not About Food: evaluation of a peer-led intervention for university students

Researchers in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton are looking for volunteers to take part in a study led by Dr. Kathryn Weaver.

This study is about the effectiveness of peer education and support for persons who want help with eating disorders/issues. No medical diagnosis is needed; however, participants must be eligible for (or already receiving) care from a health care professional.

Participants will be asked to:

  1. Regularly attend the It’s Not About Food group, which will take place virtually (using Zoom technology) on Monday evenings from 7 - 9 p.m. (Atlantic time) for 6 weeks, beginning October 26, 2020.
  2. Complete pre- and post-questionnaires about eating behaviours, quality of life, relapse, and recovery. At the end of the group, participants can choose to have individual interviews with a research assistant or by responding to online survey questions.

Participation in the virtual group sessions is entirely voluntary. You may attend the It’s Not About Food group without participating in the research component. Having individuals involved in It’s Not About Food will help evaluate this peer-led intervention designed to improve eating issues and quality of life among university students, as well as to inform future studies. Overall, participants in the It’s Not About Food group will have the opportunity to speak with others who also struggle with disordered eating.
