Racial Identity and Self-damaging Experiences in Canada

Mental health research in Canada has often overlooked the experiences of people of colour, leading to gaps in understanding and support.

With this study, researchers at Western University aim to explore the challenges and strengths of people of colour living in Canada with self-damaging experiences. These "self-damaging" experiences may involve urges, thoughts, or desires to binge drink, self-harm, binge-eat, or purge.

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • are a minimum of 16 years old
  • are a person of colour
  • live in Canada
  • have been treated differently because of your race/ethnicity,
  • experience urges or desires to binge drink, engage in disordered eating behaviours, or self-harm

Participation  involves:

  • 1-2 hour online interview
  • surveys about your mental health and wellbeing
  • smartphone app with questions about your day-to-day experiences over approximately 2 weeks
