• What is NEDIC?

    • What does NEDIC do?

NEDIC primarily provides information, resources, and referrals over the phone, email, or instant chat for those affected by eating disorders and related concerns. Our helpline is available at no cost over the phone and via instant chat for anyone living in Canada.

NEDIC also works to educate people about positive body image and challenge harmful ideas about our bodies. This work is done especially for children, teens, and young adults through our Beyond Images curriculum and our Body Pride program.

    • Can I call NEDIC if I am in a crisis?

NEDIC is not a crisis line but we are able to help you find further support after the crisis situation has passed.

If you are in a crisis, please visit Crisis Services Canada to find crisis help near you. You can also connect with KidsHelpPhone by phoning 1-800-668-6868 or texting CONNECT to 686868.

You can also call 911 or go to your closest emergency room, if that is possible and safe for you.

    • What are NEDIC's values?

At NEDIC, it is important that we create a safe space for you. This means we are non-judgmental, compassionate, and respect your boundaries. NEDIC believes that all foods are meant to be enjoyed. NEDIC works hard to make sure that everyone has a voice and that people affected by eating disorders or mental health struggles are treated with kindness and dignity. We respect your ability to make decisions for yourself. We recognize that not everyone has access to the same resources and privileges. We believe that everyone deserves to recover from their eating disorder.

  • How can NEDIC help me?

    • What does support from NEDIC look like?

We will work with you to support you in the ways that you need it in the moment. That might look like sending some resources to read, referring you to an eating disorder program or professional near you, or talking through some coping strategies. We will not tell you what to do or push you to take a specific course of action. NEDIC is happy to be your listener, answer your questions, and even connect you with someone who can help you with whatever you’re dealing with.

    • Is this confidential?

Yes, our helpline and chat services are confidential. Your information will not be shared with anyone outside of NEDIC. You can share as much or as little with us as you like.

We only know what you tell us. That might mean that we know your first name (or a nickname), your pronouns, and any other information that you choose to share with us. We might ask for your age and location so that we can find resources which are most appropriate to you, but you do not have to provide this information.  (The reason we ask your age is because some services are different depending on whether or not you are over 18.)

If you are in a situation which is dangerous to you or others, we will let you know that we are worried. You will have the option to keep talking, or we can refer you to an organization which is better equipped to help with these concerns. We can also help you make a report if you share some information with us (for example: -your full name and phone number), but that would be your decision.
